Spring Cleaning Parents Team Up Early To Save Avoidable Home Repairs : The Saturday Weekend Review #167

The Saturday Weekend Review(1)

DON’T PUT OFF WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY FOR TOMORROW   Spring cleaning is a must for our family and something the wife and I have done every year since we bought our house back in 2009. Cleaning the house inside and out after a harsh winter is not appealing but many of us have had all winter to wind up the motor for these Spring cleaning chores. In 2009 we were dual-income homeowners without a child and we pretty much had all the spare time in the world to keep our home pristine looking. Most times people would compliment us on how tidy and clean our house was and thought it looked magazine ready. Although we chuckled when those compliments came in these days we’d LOVE if just one person would compliment our toy-ridden house that has been taken over by a 19 month old “Wreck it Ralph”. He contributes to 99% of the disaster around this house and thinks it’s hilarious. We do too in a parenting kind of way, lol. As a husband and father who works 6 days a week at 2 jobs and blogs I have a pretty tight schedule to fill these days. What […]

The Dollar Store Should Be Called The Dollars Store : The Saturday Weekend Review #166

The Dollars Store Dollar Store

ONE PRICE DOES NOT FIT ALL: DOLLAR STORE ITEMS ARE GOING UP IN PRICE   It’s easier for consumers to justify spending a dollar on a product but what happens when that same products is now double or triple the price? The everything for a dollar store is now dead and has been for a while but now prices are slated to go up again at Dollarama. Low-income earners are not the only customers that frequent dollar stores to stock up on a variety of products for less. Just about every wallet and bank account finds something they need at the dollar store. Why spend more money than you have to if you can find it cheaper? That’s the way the wife and I have thought over the years as customers to many dollar stores. Almost every store you go into today has some sort of dollar section where they try to compete with dollar stores around Canada. It makes sense because if they can fool all of us into one-stop shopping then they have control over the market which can be bleak at times. There isn’t any money to spend for consumers so less is best yet we all […]

Frugal Easter Traditions We’ve Started As A Family : The Saturday Weekend Review #165

Easter Traditions Happy Easter(1)

EASTER FUN FOR EVERYONE WITHOUT DIGGING DEEP INTO YOUR WALLET   Creating Easter traditions with your family whether you have kids or not means you can plan ahead so you don’t go over-board with Easter expenses. Do we budget for Easter? Yes and No and here’s why. This is the first year that we’ve really invested any money into Easter for our son. Now that we know how much we’ve spent on Easter this year we will be able to sort out a projected expense for the beginning of 2017 since this holiday has just passed. Related: What are projected expenses and why are they important? The Dollar store is fully loaded with Easter celebration materials and chocolates galore. When you are dealing with young kids remember that they don’t need an Easter basket filled with just chocolates. Some families buy far too much at Easter and end up with tonnes of chocolate they either give away or freeze. If your relatives want to give an Easter gift you can always suggest a small chocolate treat along with other Easter options for the kids. Having a treat once in a while is nice but we put the brakes on after […]

Money Is A Resource Not To Be Confused With A Power Tool : The Saturday Weekend Review #164

MONEY IS A RESOURCE NOT A POWER TOOL

THE WEALTH OF PERSPECTIVE TELLS US THAT NOTHING IS AS IT SEEMS   If you love money and I mean REALLY love money don’t ever let it push you over the edge to submerge those you love with a life of unhealthy behaviours which includes embarrassing yourself. My wife and I hardly consider ourselves rich BUT some people may because we no longer have a mortgage, we are young and I earn an good income and love my career. We never use our blessings in a manner which demonstrates rudeness towards others rather we contribute to society in a giving way. Related: How we became mortgage free in 5 years This blog is an example of how we want to motivate others to become debt free while building our own relationship together. The budget never stopped for us when the debt was gone. Throughout the years we’ve used money to help us understand how it affects our relationship and how to continue growing as a couple. Money is one of the main reasons people divorce these days and we don’t want to become a statistic so we work on US. Money is just, well money. Related: Rebuilding Life and Finances […]

Change Your Financial Behaviour From Zoom To Panoramic View : The Saturday Weekend Review #163

The Saturday Weekend Review logo

LET YOUR MIND TAKE THE WHEEL   Changing your financial behaviour to take on a frugal perspective is the first motivational step to help you to achieve your money goals and become rich with freedom from debt. If your financial behaviour consists of creating debt and losing sleep over how you will pay for it then you need a wake-up call and you need it now. Do yourself a favour and wash your face with cold water and look at yourself in the mirror and say, “Today is going to be the day I change the way I view money” and don’t look back. Just as a photographer may pan out to showcase an entire landscape it’s important to view your finances from this perspective. Simply zooming in on one aspect of your debt hoping things will change for the better is not the only solution. Look at your financial house from all angles to successfully carry out a debt reduction plan and build the wealth you dream of. Too many people these days think that money grows on trees with low interest rates enticing us to shop. With the availability of credit it’s easy to get into a vicious […]

Your Texting Addiction Could Cost You Your Job : The Saturday Weekend Review : #162

The Saturday Weekend Review logo

LEAVE YOUR SMARTPHONE ALONE   Texting, hail to the new normal of our world where looking down is more important than life itself. Is texting making you less human? For many people the answer is yes because the smartphone addiction is a hard habit to break. Why oh why have we not learned that texting is an evil that can instantly cost you your life, someone else’s life or your job. Do you ever catch yourself saying this? It will never happen to me. I will never get caught. No one is watching. It was only a second. It takes only a second, to die or get injured. One second! You can never take that second back. As a new parent I’m skeptical to leave our son with anyone because these days I wonder what kind of care he would get. I’m sure I’ll get over it but any parent will tell you they worry about their child even when they are not with them. If you bring your child to daycare or any other activity that requires someone to watch your child you want to make sure they are 100% protected from harm. Accidents do happen but when they […]

Ontario Budget 2016 Will Affect Your Household Budget : The Saturday Weekend Review #161

The Saturday Weekend Review logo

ROLL OUT THE FINANCIAL RED CARPET   If you don’t think your household budget will be affected by the Ontario Budget 2016, think again. For the most part there are your typical increases but with every extra dollar spent that’s money you must account for. The new Ontario Budget 2016 lit up the internet and social media on Thursday when highlights of the new budget were announced. To be honest I wasn’t sitting by the computer waiting for the new Ontario Budget it kind of hit me in the face. It generated such a buzz that my Twitter and Facebook feed was littered with posts and comments. So over a cup of coffee I read article after article about the pros and cons but the bickering between students was outrageous on some Facebook pages. When money is concerned you can’t please everyone and the government knows this. You’re almost taking from one pot to fill another and hoping that they balance themselves. The deficit for 2016-17 is projected to come in at $4.3 billion and be reduced to zero the following fiscal year Ontario’s net debt will hit $308 billion in 2016-17, the largest of any sub-national jurisdiction in the […]

Daddy, how much do you make an hour? : The Saturday Weekend Review #160

The Saturday Weekend Review logo

IS THE MONEY REALLY WORTH IT TO YOU?   Sometimes kids come up with the strangest requests when talking to their parents but when your child is begging you for attention you know that something must change. Becoming a daddy to a little boy was something I never expected would happen because doctors said we had under a 1% chance of getting pregnant, but we did and my life has changed so much. Our lives have changed, but for the better because we have this amazing little guy in our lives who makes us smile every day. When my wife was in the hospital I took care of our son day and night because of medications she was taking plus she was pumping breast milk around the clock as our son could not latch on because of an upper lip tie and tongue tie . It was a long week in the hospital but in that week I bonded with our son experiencing love in a way I never thought was possible for a child. Those little hands, those big eyes and that smile captured me in a way I never thought possible. What was this love I was feeling? […]

Family Day Fun In Our House Goes Like This : The Saturday Weekend Review #159

The Saturday Weekend Review logo

FAMILY FIRST…TOUGH WORDS TO LIVE UP TO WHEN WORK KEEPS YOU AWAY   Family Day Fun is not something you pay for, it’s something you create together with the people who mean the most to you. There’s a statutory family holiday in February and it’s called Family Day… how will you spend your day? This will be my eighth Family Day in Canada and every year I learn something more about this beautiful country I call home. Today I’m going to share with you what I’ll be doing with my precious family this Family Day whom I love and miss when I’m not home to spend time with them. I’ve learned that even if you are tired and feel you can’t go on the love of your family always makes you go the extra mile.   Family Day Stat Holiday   You don’t need kids to enjoy Family Day fun either. Couples all over Ontario are finding ways of enjoying the holiday with just as much excitement as parents are with their kiddos. Family doesn’t mean “blood” either it can be anyone you consider to be part of your family. Family Day in Ontario is this coming Monday, February 15 […]

Travelling Tips You’ll Want To Read Before Boarding : The Saturday Weekend Review #158

travelling tips (1)

DON’T MAKE TRAVELLING MISTAKES YOU’LL REGRET   Traveling around the world was on my bucket list in my 20’s and although I’ve been to many places such as Iceland, Thailand, Spain and Portugal (just to name a few) I’ve learned a few travelling tricks along the way. I always made sure to arm myself with all securities because the last thing I needed was to end up dead, injured, stranded or without my valuables because I made the wrong choices. Travel insurance is a must when you are travelling out of country anywhere, even to the USA. At the least talk to your insurance company to see if you need additional coverage. If you think nothing can happen, think again. Friends of ours recently went travelling to Mexico for a 2 week holiday after celebrating their first wedding anniversary. They actually got married in Cuba but thought travelling to different destination spots every time they vacationed made more sense. I don’t blame them because the last thing I’d want to do is travel to the same resort or country over and over unless I wasn’t finished with the original trip. In most cases you may have more tourist spots that […]

Sexy Photo Fun Could End Up A Nightmare Of Revenge Porn – The Saturday Weekend Review #157

The Saturday Weekend Review logo

ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS TO GO BROKE IS TO COMMIT A CRIME   What happens behind closed doors in an intimate relationship should stay closed. For those who feel wronged in a relationship or have other ulterior motives “revenge porn” may be their ticket to getting the last laugh or to cash in. It could also be the worst mistake mentally, physically and financially one could commit if they are caught in such a situation. Let’s not forget about the victim who has to suffer the consequences of their private life splattered on the web. It’s a horrible situation. The word “Porn” may be labelled a dirty word but it’s one of the biggest money-making industries in the world. Nobody wants to talk about it nor read about it but it’s everyday people who get caught up in crimes like revenge porn. Individuals who feel they have a power over someone with pornography need to understand that the consequences of their actions will not be tolerated by the law. It’s also important for parents to discuss topics like this with their teenage children because they know about sex whether you choose to believe it or not. Don’t get upset […]

My Neighbour Made Me Richer Over One Beer : The Saturday Weekend Review #156

The Saturday Weekend Review logo

FINDING RICHES WHERE I NEVER EXPECTED I WOULD…   I’m Richer because my bank account says I’m rich. Don’t expect that to pop up but I can tell you that many of us need to back off the money train and take a look at our lives, from all angles. How many slices are in your pie? You should know the answer by the time you finish reading this post. Our neighbour went away on vacation with his wife for 2 weeks but since we hadn’t seen them we weren’t aware that they were gone. No big deal as we don’t talk to them everyday nor do we need to know their every move. One day while I was out shoveling in the late evening I noticed that their garage door was wide open and no lights were on. The vehicles were nowhere to be found and instantly I knew something wasn’t right. Since we have the key to their house in case of emergency I went in and locked everything up. They had gone on vacation and left their garage door open as well the man door to anyone who was thirsty to clean them out of house and […]
