Are coupon apps replacing paper coupons?

Coupon app Snap Saves

SAVE WITH YOUR MOBILE PHONE   Instant savings coupon apps in Canada are popping up all over the place so fast that it’s hard for me to keep track these days. The mobile coupon is becoming a household name and the savings are waiting to be claimed. All those people who said you couldn’t get savings on healthy foods will be eating their words because coupon apps are here to stay. As you can see from the photo you can now save money on all sorts of produce ranging from yams to lettuce and tomatoes. Is the savings worth your time now? Saving money in your grocery budget using your mobile phone, provided you have one means no more carting around big bulky coupon binders. To be honest when I started the weekly grocery game challenge here at CBB I never dreamed there would be grocery saving apps the way they are around today. I can remember starting to order coupons from save.ca years ago and then realizing that there were more companies that were willing to send out coupons in the mail. It was a great way for us to cut back on spending while grocery shopping but it […]

Let Your Coupons Expire And Save Money!

oupon binder coupons expire

YOU DON’T NEED TO USE EVERY COUPON THAT YOU GET YOUR HANDS ON   I know it sounds strange that I’m saying to let your coupons expire and save money but the reality is for some people, they can’t let them expire. The coupon binder seems to be a fixture in most grocery carts (British: shopping trolley) these days and if you don’t believe me have a gander inside other people’s carts next time you shop. I’m not saying it’s a negative, but we stopped bringing our binder because we would overspend on the odd occasion while shopping. Now we leave the coupon binder at home or in the car and only take out the coupons we need for that shop. There’s not many times we have the heart pumping “start the car” moments anymore and we’re happy with that.   What We’ve Learned   If you follow Yeassaey you know that I started The Grocery Game Challenge (GGC) back in early 2012 with much success over the past year. The birth of the GGC was because my wife and I were spending far too much money on groceries for 2 people. We thought we were doing better than […]

Capitalize on Boxing Day Deals in Canada

Boxing Day in Canada is most commonly viewed as a day of fighting through hoards of shoppers beginning in the early hours of the morning. Boxing Day is the day immediately following Christmas during which huge numbers of people will line up for hours outside of stores in the hopes of scoring the best deals. Happening yearly on December 26th, it’s the kind of holiday that people partake in without actually knowing why they’re celebrating it or even when it started. It’s also the time of year during which scores of naysayers argue that boxing day sales aren’t as rock-bottom as they would expect, but the main thing that needs to be understood is that older models and items will be heavily discounted, while a brand new TV that came out this year will unlikely be. The Meaning of Boxing Day and it’s History Though it’s unclear how Boxing Day truly originated, a few historical facts (or perhaps passed-down rumours that were never true to begin with) stand out: On the day following Christmas, wealthy masters of the household would hand servants gifts inside of a wooden or clay container as a kind of token of appreciation for the year, and more specifically for […]

How to Earn Optimum Points Fast at Shoppers Drug Mart

It’s not often that you will see me buying a cart full of groceries at Shoppers Drug Mart (the store is WAY overpriced for most things), but when you do, I have a very good reason for it. That reason is likely because I am getting a boatload of Shoppers Optimum Reward points for buying a whole whack of stuff (or, I’m redeeming those points for a ton of free goodies). In my opinion, the Shoppers Optimum Rewards program is the best rewards program that is offered in Canada. I am not paid by Shoppers Drug Mart to promote their program (I wish!), but I love it so much that I tell everyone who will listen. It really is quite simple to rack up lots of Optimum points in a short period. Tips on How to Earn Shoppers Optimum Rewards Points Fast: 1. Only shop on Bonus Point Days This should be obvious, but many people don’t know that the only time you should ever set foot inside a Shoppers Drug Mart location is when they are hosting a bonus point promotion (20x the points, 8,000 points when you spend $50, etc.). Of course, there are exceptions to this rule (prescription pick-up, checking out clearance deals, or […]

Make The Most Out Of Black Friday Deals Without Crossing the Border

With at least 18% of Canadians expected to cross the border to enjoy deals on Black Friday in the U.S., some might be wondering if it’s even possible to save money from within Canada? I’ve been blogging about shopping deals and frugal living in Canada for a few years now, and I wanted to share some of my best tips to get the most out of your Black Friday shopping in Canada. That’s right, there are some great discounts to enjoy on our side of the border too! Black Friday Deals in Canada Since the Canadian dollar is now on par with the U.S., many Canadians have picked up the habit of crossing the border to shop the Black Friday sales. Now, Canadian stores aren’t blind, they have taken note, so that more and more Canadian retail stores are also offering comparable deals on Black Friday to keep paying customers on Canadian soil. Shopping the Black Friday deals in Canada avoids the long waiting lines at customs and the crazy hordes in shopping centres while saving money on gas too. Some offers might not be as good as what’s on offer in the U.S. (it’s getting closer though). But you also need to take into consideration […]

Why Canadians Love FREE Product Samples?

free product samples-pic

EVERYONE LOVES SOMETHING FOR FREE   Do you love Free Product Samples like I do? I’m sure all of us have bought a product and were disappointed by it at some point in our lives whether it was a beauty, cleaning, or food product. Sometimes, I feel kind of “cheated” when I buy a full-size product for the first time, only to throw it away shortly afterwards. That’s why it’s always a good idea to “try before you buy”. If you are frugal like we are and use coupons you’re better off letting your coupons expire before you use them on full product especially if you haven’t had a chance to use the product before. We like to try and find samples first and we don’t see samples we’ve been successful in the past asking the customer service associate if they have any samples of the product to test. Not all products in-store will have free product samples you can test especially if it’s a taste test or something you need to add to your laundry but if it’s lotions, perfumes or food you might just get lucky. How many of you run to the free sample booth at the […]

Knowing Your Prices Is The Key To Saving Money On Your Grocery Bill

sale prices

Today I’m going to help those of you who want to save money in your grocery budget by posting your shops in The Grocery Game Challenge. I’m going to talk to you about the Importance of Knowing Grocery Prices. Knowing your prices, and knowing them well is the best way to get more bang for your buck in the budget. This is not going to happen over night, this takes a lot of practice and a consistent weekly effort to perfect your grocery shopping. I still don’t have it perfected but I’ve learned a lot and still learn every time I shop. I’m going to use Whiskas Cat food as a great example. Walmart Regular Price is $6.99 for a 1.5 kg. It does go on sale for $6.49. No Frills Regular price is $6.49 for the same 1.5 kg bag. Did you know how long it took me to figure this out? About 4 months. I was so hung up on “Flyer Watching“ and buying items on sale, thinking the sale price is “The Price to Watch for“. I wasn’t engaging in comparison pricing of “Regular Prices” at each store. This is where I suggest for your to start. Take the basic necessities – […]

Stockpiling is not as difficult as it seems and don’t be set-back or intimidated when you see those TV shows on TLC The Learning Channel). Til Death Do Us Coupon- Are you doing it Canada?

Two things in life are for definite “Taxes” and “Death”. Creeping the list is “Debt” which is a reality for most Canadians. It really doesn’t matter what your neighbour has, it matters what YOU have! How can we dig ourselves out from this mess we created? Yes we all did it, purchased items with money we didn’t have. Now we need to clean it up. One way to help the clean up is using coupons to save money. I never thought I would say this. Coupons… Really? What man uses coupons? Not this one, no way! That’s what I thought a few years back. Now it’s a no-brainer. Yes, couponing can and will help you save money but it’s just one step in getting debt under control. Extra money you save from couponing you can put towards your debt or investments. Some people have to coupon just to put food on the table but at the end of the day, money is saved. I remember my granny clipping coupons when I was a lad. Of course I had no idea about coupons back in the day. Who knew 30 years later consumers around the world still clip coupons to […]
